Vatican City : Pope Francis (88), the supreme spiritual leader of the Catholic Church, passed away at 7:35 AM on Monday (Italy time). He had been battling severe health issues, including respiratory problems, double pneumonia, and kidney ailments for some time. After undergoing treatment in a hospital for 38 days starting February 14, he was discharged last month. Vatican authorities confirmed his demise. Assuming the papacy in 2013 after Pope Benedict, Francis, born in Argentina in 1938, was the first South American to hold this position. Known as the “People’s Pope,” he frequently voiced his opinions on social issues. In 2016, he washed the feet of refugees from different faiths outside Rome, symbolizing his humility and dedication to service.

Easter Message Calls for Peace

Despite his critical health, Pope Francis delivered a message during Easter celebrations just hours before his passing. Addressing around 35,000 devotees at St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, he personally greeted, “Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter!” His message, read out by Archbishop Diego Ravelli, urged for peace in conflict-ridden regions like Gaza, Ukraine, Congo, and Myanmar. Traveling among the crowd in a special vehicle, he paused to bless infants and children. During the Easter event, US Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha, met the Pope, who gifted them three large chocolate Easter eggs.

The passing of Pope Francis has left the world in mourning. US Vice President JD Vance said, “His speeches during the early days of Covid remain unforgettable.” European Union President Ursula von der Leyen noted, “His compassionate nature inspired millions beyond the Catholic world.” French President Emmanuel Macron stated, “Pope Francis was a beacon of hope and unity, tirelessly advocating for the marginalized and a more inclusive world.” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer added, “His unwavering commitment to peace and justice leaves an enduring legacy, touching hearts across faiths and nations.”
